Harboring the Good Life
Client City of Dana Point
Dana Point, a coastal California community of 30,000 that swells to over 100,000 on weekends, is a destination defined by its natural beauty and seaside energy. With its harbor, beaches, and bustling business districts, the city offers visitors and residents alike a vibrant mix of recreation and relaxation. When tasked with creating a city signage and wayfinding system, RSM Design set out to capture the spirit of Dana Point while guiding people seamlessly to parks, resorts, parking, and beyond. The team invited business owners, residents, and local groups into the visioning process, ensuring the final system would reflect the city’s unique character. Inspired by local artists, the resulting designs became more than just signs; they became an extension of the community’s identity.
From paddle boarding and surfing to hiking along the rugged coastal bluffs, Dana Point is an active playground with sweeping views around every bend. RSM Design’s wayfinding plan connected these experiences, providing clear direction from the harbor to downtown and from parking lots to the sand. The city’s new trolley system helped fill longer gaps, creating a truly walkable, safe, and welcoming environment. With memorable, artful signage serving as a roadmap, visitors can immerse themselves in the Dana Point experience without worry and discover every corner of the city with ease and delight.
Dana Point takes its name from Richard Henry Dana Jr., whose 1840 memoir Two Years Before the Mast chronicled the California coast from the deck of a merchant ship. RSM Design began there — understanding what makes this city distinct from every other harbor town on the coast.
RSM Design designed the exterior wrap for the Dana Point Trolley, a coastal circulator serving Dana Point and the surrounding harbor area.
